There are some places that naturally make you want to slow down. A warm coffee after a walk, homemade food shared with friends, or a quiet moment taking in the Scottish landscape can turn a simple stop into part of the journey.
That is exactly the feeling behind St Mocha Coffee Shops, a family-owned specialty coffee business set around Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
Founded in 2014 by brothers Stuart and David Fraser, St Mocha has grown from one local coffee shop into three distinctive places to enjoy specialty coffee, homemade ice cream, freshly prepared food, and a little Scottish hospitality along the way.
For anyone exploring the area, it is the kind of place that fits naturally into a slower day, whether you are heading out for a countryside walk, exploring the villages around the National Park, or simply looking for somewhere cosy to pause.
Coffee With a Sense of Place
The original St Mocha is in Balmaha, beside The Oak Tree Inn and close to the West Highland Way. Surrounded by the landscapes of Loch Lomond, it is a particularly fitting setting for a coffee shop built around the idea of enjoying the moment.
This is also where the business’s own coffee journey comes to life. In 2017, the team launched Loch Lomond Coffee Co., becoming the first dedicated coffee roaster in the National Park. Coffee is ethically sourced from around the world and roasted in Balmaha before being served across St Mocha’s locations and supplied to customers throughout Scotland.
There is something especially appealing about enjoying a cup of coffee knowing it has been roasted just a short distance away.
And coffee is only part of the experience. The Balmaha location is also home to St Mocha’s ice cream production, making it an easy place to linger over something sweet after a day outdoors.
Three Places, Three Ways to Stop

St Mocha has grown while keeping each of its locations connected to its surroundings.
In Balmaha, the original coffee shop and ice cream parlour offers a natural stop for walkers and visitors exploring Loch Lomond.
At St Mocha @ The Station in Aberfoyle, the coffee shop sits in the heart of the village alongside a gift store, making it an easy addition to a day exploring the Trossachs.
Then there is St Mocha Carbeth Drive-Thru, created for those travelling between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. It has the distinction of being the UK’s first speciality coffee drive-thru, bringing the same focus on quality coffee to people who are on the move.
Different settings, but the same idea: making good coffee part of the journey.
A Scottish Story in the Name

Even the name St Mocha has a connection to the landscape.
The name is inspired by the ancient Gaelic origins of Balmaha, meaning “The Pass of Saint Mocha.” It reflects the business’s close relationship with the history and character of the area rather than feeling like a name chosen at random.
That sense of belonging is noticeable throughout the brand. St Mocha feels less like a coffee chain and more like a collection of local places that have grown alongside the communities and landscapes around them.
Slow Moments, Thoughtfully Made
Sustainability is another important part of the St Mocha story.
The business supports local conservation projects, including red squirrel conservation, with 50p from every retail bag of coffee sold donated towards the cause. Renewable energy, including solar power and biomass heating, is also part of its approach, while local suppliers are used wherever possible.
It is an approach that feels particularly appropriate here. When your coffee shops are surrounded by forests, lochs, walking trails, and protected landscapes, looking after the environment becomes part of looking after the place itself.
For visitors, that creates an experience that feels easy to appreciate: good coffee, beautiful surroundings, and the opportunity to pause without rushing.

A Little Hygge in the Scottish Highlands
At Hygge Cottages, we love the places that make travel feel less about ticking things off a list and more about enjoying the little moments in between.
St Mocha fits beautifully into that kind of journey.
Imagine spending the morning exploring Loch Lomond, stopping for a freshly roasted coffee, warming up with something homemade, and then continuing on to a cosy cottage for a quiet evening. It is those simple rituals coffee after a walk, good food, beautiful scenery, and nowhere you urgently need to be that can make a getaway memorable.
St Mocha has built its story around exactly those moments.
From its family beginnings in Balmaha to its three locations across the area, it remains rooted in specialty coffee, Scottish hospitality, and a genuine connection to its surroundings.
And if you are exploring Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, sometimes the best part of the day is simply finding a good coffee shop, settling in for a while and letting the landscape do the rest.
